The benefits of meditation are endless. Meditation has been shown to help increase concentration, reduce stress and anxiety, improve decision-making skills, and boost your immune system. If you’re looking for a mental break from the hectic day-to-day grind, or need some downtime in order to relax after work – try meditating!

Before we dive into the many benefits of meditation, here are some simple steps to get started. Meditation can be a simple practice anyone can learn and master. In fact, it doesn’t require any special equipment or even a special place. You just need to show up, have the desire to give yourself a rest from the stresses of life, and follow a few easy steps.

Simple Steps to Start Your Meditation Practice

Step 1

You can meditate anywhere and at any time. You can meditate while sitting in a chair, laying on your bed, taking a walk outside, or even washing the dishes. It’s best if you can sit in a comfortable chair with your feet on the ground.

Step 2

Focus on the breath. Gently focus on breathing in to a count of 6, and then out to a count of 6. Do this for at least 5 minutes, which is a suitable time to meditate for a beginner.

Step 3

Allow any thoughts that might come up, but gently keep moving back to focusing on your breath! That’s all you need to do.

There you have it! That’s a simple recipe for meditation. Sure, there is much more to it than that. There are many types of meditations you can learn, and styles you can practice. There are different ways to meditate and things to meditate upon. But, for now, to get started, a simple breathing meditation is perfect.

10 Benefits of Meditation

  1. Find more meaning in life. Are you inner directed or outer directed? Meditation is the perfect solution for those who don’t subscribe to the shallow outer-directed lifestyle. Meditation provides the key to tuning into your inner world because it helps you tune out the outer one. In meditation, you get to reflect on what’s going on inside you and figure out what it is that you really want in life. Until you can get quiet with your thoughts, it’s very hard to think clearly about anything. Meditation reduces distraction.
  2. Improve your health. Meditation is proven to decrease stress and improve a sense of well-being. It’s a great way to add a boost to your immunity and your overall health profile. Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate and risk of cardiovascular disease, improve sleep quality, boost the immune system, and reduce chronic pain.
  3. Start your day with a sense of calm. Scheduling in an early morning meditation is a wonderful and healthful way to start your day on the right foot. Instead of jumping into thinking about work and responsibilities first thing, meditation can provide the foundation upon which you can thoughtfully consider the rest of the day ahead.
  4. End your day in peace by scheduling a brief meditation right before bed. Many people have difficulty sleeping because of all the thoughts running through their head. These thoughts create stress and anxiety, which makes it troublesome to fall asleep and stay asleep. When you meditate before bed, you give your mind and body the opportunity to calm down. It helps you get re-aligned with that peaceful inner core you possess, but have little time to connect with during the busy day. Even a short 5 minute meditation will allow you to fall asleep faster and enjoy more quality sleep time.
  5. Take a break from stress. Mini meditation sessions are a quick way to work meditation into your day. Five minutes is all you need. Fit it in while you’re sitting in your car (not driving), perhaps during your lunch hour. Sit at your desk between meetings and just take a few minutes to practice rhythmic breathing and allow the cares and stresses of the day to melt away. If you find yourself in a long wait line, rather than use it to play on your phone, use it to practice your breathing and invest in a short meditation.
  6. Improve your relationships with others. When practiced regularly, meditation can help increase the quality of your relationships with both friends and family members. Meditation helps you to look at yourself and others with more compassion, understanding, patience, and love.
  7. Increase your mindful awareness. When we’re mindful, we’re able to step out of our thoughts and notice when they come up again. We’re also able to focus more on what’s going on around us without getting too caught up in our minds. Meditation allows us to befriend our thoughts and not get overly attached or invested in them.
  8. Cultivate more love for yourself. Meditation is a form of self-care. And taking time to take care of yourself is the highest form of love there is. Meditation emphasizes the qualities of kindness, love, and understanding for ourselves and others.
  9. Moderates our emotions for the better. Meditation helps to reduce our fear and anger. Much of this has to do with the mind and body’s response to the practice. The fastest way to reduce fear or anger is to engage in rhythmic breathing. It immediately calms the mind, which then calms the heart. It also enhances feelings of well-being and happiness.
  10. Enhance your spiritual or religious practices. Meditation is the perfect practice for deepening our connection to our beliefs. Whether we’re meditating on a word, scripture, a quality of being, or even a sound or vibration that encompasses our belief, meditation will add a new and richer dimension to that experience.

Try incorporating a meditation practice into your life so you can enjoy the many benefits it offers. If you’re looking for more meaning in your life, improve your health or reduce your overall stress, meditation might be the answer. Start with just 5 minutes per day. Invest in yourself — and your future health and happiness. Meditation works!
